The back story:  As Walt Whitman’s secretary during his final years, Horace Traubel meticulously recorded the poet’s musings, conversations and correspondence in handwritten notes. The first three volumes of the With Walt Whitman in Camden series, compiled from these notes, were issued by commercial publishers under Traubel’s supervision, starting in 1906. Four further volumes, edited by Traubel’s daughter and later Whitman scholars, were published by university presses between 1953 and 1992.   Our part:  In 1996, W L Bentley Books published volumes 8 & 9 to complete the series.
